Time2WakeUp: This story is creating a lot of speculation because people are referring to St. Malachy's 16th century Prophecy of the Popes. This prophecy foretells that the Last Pope, Peter the Roman, will coincide with the destruction of Rome. Pope Benedict XVI is the last pope before Peter the Roman. In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians he admonishes the reader saying, “…let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.” Interestingly, this statement is made in the context of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. As the Thessalonians (and all believers, for that matter) wait upon the return of the Lord, Paul warns that we should not sleep (katheudō), by having a carnal indifference to spiritual things, but rather we should keep awake (grēgoreō) by being cautious and watchful so that we are not suddenly overtaken by destructive calamity. Finally, he exhorts us to be sober (nēphō), by being free from the influence of intoxicants.

If ever a time was so ripe for this message it is today. We (namely westernized Christians) live in a world where spiritual things, including the return of Christ, are not even a second thought. Intoxicants such as complacency, indifference, and selfishness are common place. We are a culture of convenience, entertainment, and facades which have buried the truth. Ultimately, the truth is found in Jesus Christ, who is “…the way the truth and the life,” (John 14:6) and that truth is set forth in the Bible. And while this website will reference scripture from time to time, its focus is to uncover truth or perhaps even shed insight in today’s world through presenting news stories, that might usually get glossed over, which may hold significance for Christians in one way or another, and in so doing awaken the Sleeping Giant called the Church.
