DEVOTIONAL

"And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. And they went and woke him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing." And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm." (Matthew 8:23-26)

This comment from Jesus to His disciples is interesting in light of the context.  In chapter 8, Jesus' disciples had seen Jesus heal a Centurion's servant who had been paralyzed and was suffering greatly.  Not only had Jesus healed the servant but he "marveled" at the Centurion's faith and exclaimed, "Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith."  So why was it after seeing this miracle (along with countless other miracles) did the disciples become afraid out on the stormy sea?  Did they think that Jesus had power to heal sickness and disease only?  Was Jesus powerless when it came to nature?  At Jesus' rebuke the wind and the sea was calmed and the disciples "marveled" at the idea that "...even winds and sea obey him."

How many times do we watch God at work in our lives and in the lives of those around us only to become fearful when faced with a seemingly hopeless situation?  Have we forgotten that the same God who we have seen working in and through us, will continue to work His mighty power in us?  Let us be reminded that God does not change, he is not fickle.  Let us have faith that he will continue to guide and protect us in the storms of life.  He is Faithful! (Lamentations 3:22-23)
